Jean Bourgain (left), Institute for Advanced Study, and Terence Tao (right), UCLA, have been awarded the 2012 Crafoord Prize in Mathematics, "for their brilliant and groundbreaking work in harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, ergodic theory, number theory, combinatorics, functional analysis and theoretical computer science." The two will share the monetary award of four million Swedish Kronor, approximately US$580,000. In a press release, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (which awards the prize) said that Bourgain and Tao "have solved an impressive number of important problems in mathematics. Their deep mathematical erudition and exceptional problem-solving ability have enabled them to discover many new and fruitful connections and to make fundamental contributions to current research in several branches of mathematics." Bourgain is a Fields Medalist (1994) and a winner of the 2010 Shaw Prize. Tao is also a Fields Medalist (2006), and a winner of the 2010 Nemmers Prize, the 2005 Levi L. Conant Prize (with Allen Knutson), and the 2002 Bôcher Memorial Prize. The award ceremony will be held on May 15 in Lund, Sweden. The Swedish Academy website has more on the prize, including a video with discussion about the work of Bourgain and Tao. (Photo of Jean Bourgain by Cliff Moore.
