美国《外交杂志》最近刊登了一位被美国家庭领养的中国女婴，长大成人之后前往中国寻找亲生父母经历的文章。这位拥有美国国籍并从美国名校耶鲁大学毕业的女生寻亲的新闻在中国媒体报道后，五十多位曾经遗弃过女婴的中国父母试图认她为自己的女儿。
《外交杂志》发表的文章题为《“弃女”发声：全中国倾听》。文章的作者夏华斯（Jenna Cook）是一位20多年前被一名美国教师领养的中国弃婴。2012年，就读于耶鲁大学的她回到“故乡”武汉寻亲，希望可以找到自己的亲生父母。寻亲过程中，她见到了50多个形形色色的中国家庭，可惜最后仍然没有找到自己的亲生父母。夏华斯在外交杂志上，从自己的角度上讲述了这段寻亲之旅的过程和感受。

据统计，全中国每年约有10万儿童被遗弃。在1992年到2013年间，中国共计139，696起国际父母收养中国儿童的案例，而被外国人收养的中国遗弃婴儿中，超过90%的是女婴。瑞洁（Reggie Littlejohn）在接受美国之音记者采访的时候说：“在中国数百万甚至数千万的女婴被抛弃 ，其中许多女婴是被流产了，所以被遗弃的女婴还是‘幸运的’ ，而被收养的女婴则是‘十分幸运的’，这样的比例很小。女婴被抛弃的原因是，中国还有其他亚洲国家和世界上的部分国家都有严重的重男轻女的思想，他们觉得自己必须有一个男孩。而在（中国的）一胎化政策下，人们只能生育一个孩子，所以他们必须确保这个孩子是个儿子, 女儿就被自然而然的抛弃了。现在二胎政策是不会阻止这种状况的，人们同样会遗弃第二个女儿，他们要确保两个孩子中有一个是男孩。”
