Dear Gentlemen,
昨天，中国中央台CCTV在节目中报道，因为Mr.Jack Caffety对中国的那段政治讲评，CNN即将向中国正式书面道歉。这也可能是CCTV自己的虚构，那当然很好，因为他们一向讲述不实之词。但是，我们也担忧是否确有这种可能，因为似乎有很多在中国和在海外的华人在向你们施加压力，而你们则可能认为那段讲评不幸引起了中国人的严重误解，因此有必要再作解释以及表示歉意。倘若如此，我们以为那是不必要的，不合适的。
On May 6 there was a report on China's CCTV that CNN is preparing to make a full public apology to China in connection with political comments regarding China by Mr. Jack Cafferty. We are hoping that this report is a fabrification by CCTV, in line with their usual practice. However, we are concerned at the possibility that the report may be accurate, because it seems that CNN has been under a great deal of pressure from some Chinese people in China and abroad regarding Mr. Cafferty's comments, and you may believe that you should provide further clarification and an apology regarding the misunderstanding that has developed between Chinese people and CNN because of these comments. If that is your intention, we would like to express our own view that you are mistaken.
从上下文看，Jack Caffety讲的中国人，明显是指中国政府（更准确地说是指中共当局）。特别是"过去五十年来"这句短语，中国人有五千年历史，说"过去五十年来"，当然是指中共掌权以来，所以当然是指中国政府即中共当局。
It is clear from reading Mr. Cafferty's comments that the Chinese he was referring to were the Chinese government, specifically the Chinese Communist authorities. In particular, he specifies "the last 50 years," and given the 5,000-year history of China, it is clear that he he referring to the Chinese Communist government and its officials.
说中共当局是一帮暴徒和恶棍，这话一点不错。只需看看中共当局数度抢劫全国便足以证明。1949年之前和之后的相当一段时间，中共对中国稍有钱财的人甚至小业主和富农，实施了大规模杀戮和公开抢劫，数千万人饱受凌虐或惨遭杀害，数千万家庭被洗劫一空扫地出门。但是在"允许一部分人先富起来"的口号下，凭借着专制权力的庇护，中共权势者及子女又把属于全体人民的财产鲸吞瓜分，据为己有。中共自己的调查指出亿万富翁百分之九十以上是中共高干家庭。如果说富有并非罪恶不该受到杀戮洗劫，中共当局就必须为当年的杀戮洗劫承担责任，对当年遭受洗劫迫害的人及后代予以改正和赔偿，对责任者予以法律的历史的追究。如果富有就是罪恶，中共就应该如前对待目前的富有者，尤其目前的富有者并非世袭的或自己辛苦挣来的，而如中共自己的调查所说基本上是违法犯罪所得，更应该受到严厉的追究和惩罚。而现在既不对当年杀戮洗劫财富者忏悔补救，又是自己大肆抢劫富有起来，似乎当年抢劫灭绝富裕也对，如今抢劫社会自己富裕也对。
事实上，中共先是以革命的名义，化平民之私为所谓"全民"之公，然后又以改革的名义化全民之公为他们自己之私。先是以革命的名义抢劫，后是以改革的名义分赃，而这一切就发生在这五十年之内。这段卑鄙的历史表明，卡富迪先生说中共当局是"暴徒与恶棍"一点没错，根本无需道歉。
Mr. Cafferty is not wrong in any way when he refers to the Chinese Communist authorities as "goons and thugs." In an extended period before and after 1949, the Chinese Communists carried out mass slaughter and pillaging against all individuals in possession of private wealth, including small landowners and "rich peasants." Tens of millions of people were subjected to torture and even death, and tens of millions of families were robbed of all their worldly possessions and driven from their homes. However, under the slogan of "Letting some become prosperous first," and taking advantage of their autocratic power, the Chinese Communist leaders and their children have subsequently swallowed up the property "nationalized" on behalf of the Chinese people as a whole. The government's own investigations have acknowledged that more than 90 percent of China's billionaires are family members of Chinese officials. If it is now claimed that there is no crime in wealth, the Chinese government should rehabilitate and compensate the families who were deprived of their worldly goods when the Communist regime came to power, and determine who was responsible for these historical crimes. If wealth is still a crime, then the Chinese government should, as in the past, take the appropriate legal measures against China's current holders of wealth, especially those whose fortunes are determined to result from ill-gotten gains. Under the present situation, the Chinese government seems to want it both ways: through its lack of apology regarding the past, it suggests that its previous pillaging and slaughter were warranted, and through its inaction against current holders of wealth, it suggests that the latest round of pillaging is also warranted.
In effect, the Chinese Communist Party used the name of "revolution" to transform the common people's private property into the public property of the people as a whole. Then it used the name of "reform" to turn this public property into the private property of its own members. It stole in the name of revolution, and then divided the spoils in the name of reform, all in the space of 50 years. This sorry history suggests that Mr. Cafferty's description of the current regime as "thugs and goons" is fully warranted and requires absolutely no apology.
你们一定还记得，在十九年前，中国发生了人类历史上最大规模的民主运动。这场运动的一项主要诉求就是言论自由新闻自由。这才是真正的中国的民意。我们应该坚信人权的原则是普世价值。我们希望CNN和Mr.Jack Caffety，能够坚守新闻自由的原则和做人的良知，绝不向那种无理的压力屈服。
We're sure you remember that 19 years ago, China experienced the most widescale pro-democracy movement in human history. One of the main purposes of this movement was to demand freedom of expression and press freedom. This is the genuine aspiration of the Chinese people. We should firmly believe that universal values are the basic principle of human rights. We hope that CNN and Mr. Jack Cafferty will continue to uphold the principle of press freedom and act as the conscience of humanity, and that you will not bow to this unreasonable pressure from the Chinese government.
